    Climate

    • Mozambique has a tropical to sub-tropical climate. The dry season is from May to November, offering perfect tropical weather, plenty of sunshine, clear skies and little chance of rain. The rainy season is from December to April, expect heavy downpours, followed by glorious sunshine.
    • The best time to visit Mozambique is during the dry season. For an opportunity to spot migrating humpback whales, plan to visit between July and October. The end of the dry season, from August to October, is a good time for wildlife spotting as the bush is thin and animals congregate around rivers and waterholes. January to February is the cyclone season.

    Language & Currency

    • Portuguese is the official, and most widely spoken language in Mozambique. There are 43 Bantu languages spoken throughout Mozambique, and Emakhuwa is the most commonly spoken indigenous language. Many residents can speak English in the main tourist areas.
    • The currency of Mozambique is the metical, meticais in plural, which divides into 100 centavos. US dollars and South African rand are widely accepted. Larger cities and hotels are increasingly accepting credit cards; however, surcharges are commonplace. Outside of the Maputo, Mozambique is predominantly a cash-based society. Access to cash machines is available in larger towns; banking facilities are very limited outside of urban areas.

    Visa & Access

    • Most foreign nationals will require a visa for entry to Mozambique except for passport holders from all Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. Please check with your local Mozambican Embassy or our travel team for further information. Many nationalities can obtain tourist visas on arrival, at most ports of entry, however, if you are travelling from a country where there is Mozambican diplomatic or consular representation, tourist visas should be obtained before travelling.
    • Maputo International Airport (MPM) is the main airport serving Mozambique. There are several regional airports and airstrips throughout the country.

    Health

    • At least 6-8 weeks before departure, please visit your local health care provider or travel clinic for any vaccination requirements and to discuss any other potential health risks, such as malaria (where applicable).
